I recently chatted to Allday to learn about his life in music, Triple J’s hottest 100 and more.

Startup Cult‘ was your latest album, how has the public reacted to it?
I think it did what I wanted it to do. I mean, I wanted to make an album that I like, and I have been surprised with how many other people have enjoyed it too.

Obviously enough people were digging it because you made it into the Triple J Hottest 100 this year with 2 songs from the album. How was making it into the countdown?
It was pretty rad. When Right Now came in at 65 I was walking down to the IGA to get some ice for our drinks then go back to the party, we were walking past a cafe that was blaring the Hottest 100 and it came on. This girl who was working there came out and danced with me.

Was there anything specific that got you into the music scene?
Not really, I just liked rapping, I started doing it as a curious child, kept doing it as a hobby and fell into it as a job out of lack of other options.

Wolves Ft. Sunni Colòn was a track on the album , that’s got a different sound to the album. Why the change up?
It sounds a bit different to most of the album because I guess there are different sides to every person and Wolves was a certain brand of song I don’t always do.

Let’s have some fun: Popcorn or ice cream? Katy Perry or Taylor Swift? Thongs or Shoes?
Popcorn for me because you can eat it in the dark and in the wind but you can’t eat ice cream in those situations.
I prefer Taylor Swift at the moment but Katy Perry has some jams I fuck with.
Shoes every time, I don’t own thongs at all.

We like to here strange and interesting stories from those that we interview. Any you’ve got we might enjoy?
I have lots of strange stories. That’s so broad it’s hard to know what to say. The weirdest thing that happened today was I went to the dentist and he YouTubed my songs while I was getting worked on. Then he played some Eminem too. It was bizarre.

Do you let the current sounds of other artists influence your writing and sound? Or are you just sticking to what you want to make?
I probably have let other artist influence me a bit much at times. This time around on my album I’ll be attempting to make something a bit more “me”.

The name Allday, any story behind that?
One time I was at IGA and I took forever to select my snack, then my friends started calling me Allday.

You were one of the headlining acts at this years Goodlife Festival, how was touring with Avicii, Bliss N Eso and the rest of the acts?
It was cool. Everyone was really friendly and rad. I didn’t meet Avicii though or even see him, I saw everyone else around though.

Do you enjoy playing at festivals or regular shows more?
They are both fun in different ways. Sometimes festival crowds can be uninterested, but other times they are huge and rad. Sometimes my own shows are just crazy vibes that can’t be replaced. I just like getting to rap on stage.

Do you know the DJ?
Always.

Lastly, what can we expect to see from Allday in the future?
More music, more stuff, always getting better and more rad

Thanks Allday!
